As we age, our skin begins to lose the collagen and elastic fibers beneath it that keep it firm and smooth. As a result, we start to develop laugh and smile lines, crow's feet and facial creases over the areas where facial muscles are active.
Soft-tissue fillers, also known as injectable fillers, can help fill in these wrinkles and creases to restore your youthful appearance. They can also add fullness to your lips. The original filler was Collagen, but it has been supplanted by newer, longer lasting substances. Each of these substances has its own unique properties, and the information on the following pages will give you a clear understanding of the differences.
Allergic reactions
Allergic reactions are extremely rare with the exception of collagen, a component of Artefill®, which causes allergic reactions in about 1% of patients. If you choose Artefill®, you will be given a test patch one month before your treatment to be sure that you are not allergic.
Collagen Injectable Fillers
Collagen is still available as an Injectable Filler, but it is rarely requested because it typically lasts only half as long as the newer generation fillers. It is used as a component of Artefill® primarily to assist in the delivery of the active ingredient in Artefill®: the PMMA microspheres. Collagen does deserve credit as the pioneer product that paved the way for the newer Injectable Fillers.
